Interested in technology and journalism? We are looking for candidates to test Google Glass together with the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) in the project «Glass Reporter».

Todays Glass story was an elaborate April Fools’ Day story. Thanks to all the applicants, we hope that this could become reality one day.

Wearables could be the technology that in the future will have the most impact on journalism. To be ahead of the game, NRK have been in talks with Google to test Google Glass as a newsgathering-tool since last year.

Unique project

The goal is to learn how the audience can contribute to NRK’s news broadcasts in the future, and we need three members of the public that can help us to test Google Glass as a tool in news production from the public.

Dagsrevyen (The Daily Review), NRK’s daily evening news programme will in short time equip all their reporters with Google Glass. It wil run a custom NRK/Android-distro that enables live-broadcast, production of short clips for mobile and Instagram directly from the glasses.

– This opens up fantastic opportunities, says Solheim. He emphasizes that from NRKbeta’s side, it has always been a deal breaker to include the public as early as possible.

It now looks like NRK’s selected Glass reporters will deliver material from Glass to the evening news at an earlier stage than NRK’s own journalists.

– It is a milestone in the public involvement that we have worked hard on since NRKbeta was born, says Solheim.

NRKbeta are thus responsible for finding candidates for the project that is unique in the world and will combine Google’s technological expertise with NRK’s knowledge of broadcasting and media production (and you can apply at the bottom of the case!).

NRK has now gained an edge over the rest of the media world is difficult to catch up.

Met Schmidt in the US

– Today we are really proud to officially present this partnership, says editor of NRKbeta Eirik Solheim.

He travelled to the USA this October and met with Google’s Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt to discuss the partnership with NRK.

– Being so close to Google’s executives has been an incredible experience. The reception me and my colleagues from NRK have gotten from Erik Schmidt and the rest of Google’s Glass crew shows that journalism and news will be a key business for Google in the future. NRK now has a unique position and a head start that the rest of the media world will have trouble catching up to, smiles Solheim.

Unique project

The aim is to learn how our audience can contribute to NRK’s news broadcasting in the future. Thus we need people that can help us test Google Glass as a tool in news broadcasting in the future.

NRK has been given the responsibility of finding candidates to the project that is unique on a world-wide scale. It will combine Google’s technological expertise and NRK’s knowledge on broadcasting and media production.

The lucky ones will get full training and coursing from key people in NRK and Google. The winners will be announced the 3rd of may, and we will contact them with more details.

After the end of the project you can keep your Google Glass!
